The Debate Institute Africa (DIA) is proud to launch the Debate & Speech Judges Fellowship, an innovative program designed to nurture the next generation of adjudicators across Uganda. This fellowship is an exciting opportunity for former high school debaters to transition into skilled judges, equipped to serve the growing speech and debate community.
Why the Judges Fellowship?
At DIA, we believe in passing the baton to future leaders. Senior judges hold a wealth of knowledge and experience that should not go untapped. This fellowship creates a structured platform for seasoned adjudicators to mentor aspiring judges, ensuring that their expertise is transferred to the next generation. By strengthening the capacity of adjudicators, we aim to bolster the quality of speech and debate tournaments nationwide.
Fellowship Highlights:
- Limited Enrollment: Only 50 former high school debaters will be admitted to the program. This ensures personalized attention and quality mentorship.
- Monthly Training Sessions: Fellows will receive comprehensive training from the most senior judges in Uganda, covering global adjudication standards.
- Shadow Judging Opportunities: Participants will get hands-on experience by shadowing seasoned adjudicators during DIA’s 2025 tournaments.
- Global Standards of Adjudication: Fellows will be trained to judge at both national and international levels, ensuring versatility and competence.
- Certification: Successful candidates will receive an official certificate of completion, validating their skills and readiness to adjudicate.
Open to All Tournaments
The Judges Fellowship is designed to benefit the entire speech and debate community. Graduates of this program will not be restricted to judging DIA’s tournaments. Instead, they will have the freedom to serve at any debate platform—local or international—or even choose not to judge DIA events at all. Our goal is to contribute to the broader ecosystem, creating a pool of highly skilled judges for tournaments everywhere.
Long-Term Impact
To ensure sustainability and accessibility, DIA will archive the fellowship’s training sessions in a dedicated YouTube playlist. This repository of resources will serve as a guide for future generations, amplifying the program’s impact for years to come.
