WORLD SCHOOLS DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP 2021 FOR ME
Having the chance to speak about topics you are passionate about is amazing, having the chance to debate about current world issues and trends is even more exciting but what tops that all off is having the chance to represent your own country at the Olympics of debate, World Schools Debate Championships. From all the new people you get to exchange ideas and information with at a global stage, each individual representing their own country, the immense amount of knowledge you can get from just participating in one debate.
Every participant works hard to lift their nation’s name high, and that’s what brings out the best in each of them,making the debate even more exciting. I have to say though,it was so much fun for me to get a platform and speak about so many interesting topics on a wide range, from gender equality to sports to globalisation, social justice, economics, International Relations and Geopolitics and most importantly the lives of indigenous people and
minorities!
Interesting for a sixteen year old to be passionate about all this, but that’s exactly how WSDC makes you feel as you connect with so many people from over 50 countries across all continents on a global platform. Though all this was quite fun and really exciting, the best part was the interactions my teammates and I made with our competitors,teenagers from all those countries all debating these topics just like us, you could say we made friends for life from the Philippines, Canada, Tanzania,Malaysia,United Arab Emirates, South Africa and so many more as well as the most amazing judges who gave us great advice after every round!
Most debate tournaments focus on finding the best team of all the participants, WSDC focuses on development of the participants themselves because these are the very individuals that will go back to develop their countries and inspire innovations there.
Team Canada took the crown this year but there’s no doubt Team Uganda is coming back stronger next year. If you love debating, WSDC is an incredible experience you should definitely have on your bucket list!
